. Chapters 0:00 Introduction 0:21 Benefits of a Cold Shower 1:53 Benefits of a Hot Shower 0:28 Conclusion A shower is a place in which a person bathes under a spray of typically warm or hot water. Indoors, there is a drain in the floor. Most showers have temperature, spray pressure and adjustable showerhead nozzle. The simplest showers have a swivelling nozzle aiming down on the user, while more complex showers have a showerhead connected to a hose that has a mounting bracket. This allows the showerer to hold the showerhead by hand to spray the water onto different parts of their body. A shower can be installed in a small shower stall or bathtub with a plastic shower curtain or door. Showering is common in Western culture due to the efficiency of using it compared with a bathtub. Its use in hygiene is, therefore, common practice.[page needed]The original showers were neither indoor structures nor man-made but were common natural formations: waterfalls. The falling water rinsed the bathers completely clean and was more efficient than bathing in a traditional basin, which required manual transport of both fresh and waste water. Ancient people began to reproduce these natural phenomena by pouring jugs of water, often very cold, over themselves after washing. There has been evidence of early upper class Egyptian and Mesopotamians having indoor shower rooms where servants would bathe them in the privacy of their own homes. However, these were rudimentary by modern standards, having rudimentary drainage systems and water was carried, not pumped, into the room. The ancient Greeks were the first people to have showers. Their aqueducts and sewage systems made of lead pipes allowed water to be pumped both into and out of large communal shower rooms used by elites and common citizens alike. These rooms have been discovered at the site of the city Pergamum and can also be found represented in pottery of the era. The depictions are very similar to modern locker room showers, and even included bars to hang up clothing.[page needed] The ancient Romans also followed this convention; their famous bathhouses (Thermae) can be found all around the Mediterranean and as far out as modern-day England. The Romans not only had these showers but also believed in bathing multiple times a week, if not every day. The water and sewage systems developed by the Greeks and Romans broke down and fell out of use after the fall of the Roman Empire. Modern showers The first mechanical shower, operated by a hand pump, was patented in England in 1767 by William Feetham, a stove maker from Ludgate Hill in London. His shower contraption used a pump to force the water into a vessel above the user's head and a chain would then be pulled to release the water from the vessel. Although the system dispensed with the servant labour of filling up and pouring out buckets of water, the showers failed to catch on with the rich as a method for piping hot water through the system was not available. The system would also recycle the same dirty water through every cycle. This early start was greatly improved in the anonymously invented English Regency shower design of circa 1810 (there is some ambiguity among the sources). The original design was over 10 feet (3

Buy AumSum Merchandise: 🤍 Website: 🤍 Let’s have a look at the advantages of cold showers: Firstly, as we are warm-blooded, the sudden sensation of cold water awakens our body, thus making us feel fresh and alert. Secondly, many scientists believe that when our body suddenly comes in contact with cold water, it sends a jolt of electrical impulses to our brain, helping boost our mood in the process. Lastly, cold showers may contribute to weight loss as our body might burn more fat to generate heat. Hot showers have the following advantages: Firstly, scientists believe that hot showers lead to the release a hormone called oxytocin, easing anxiety and stress. Secondly, as hot showers can help clear the nasal passage, they might be beneficial for a person suffering from cold. Thirdly, hot water can help release tension and stiffness in our muscles. Lastly, hot water can kill bacteria, thus preventing infections.

Subscribe 🤍 See more, easy to follow How-to videos 🤍 Script: How to take cold shower-8 benefits of a cold shower In this video, I’m going to talk through all the benefits you get from taking a cold shower and my experience with trying it. This is really as simple as it sounds. You turn on the shower to cold and step in. This is been around for centuries dating back to the ancient Romans and Greeks, even when they had the ability to heat water. This is an amazing life hack that most people have never heard of or tried. Before you think it’s crazy, let me break down the science of it for you. In the end, I’ll tell you about my results from taking cold showers for 2 straight weeks. I’m not a doctor, so don’t take this as a medical video. But I was really interested in the benefits of cold showers, so I did a ton of research on it, I read all the studies, I watched all the videos and I compiled this complete list of all the benefits and I tried it myself, so I wanted to share that with you. I wanted to share with you all the benefits that you get from it and I wanted to share with you my experience from doing it and if it helped me or not. 1. Cold showers will improve the circulation of your blood and help you with healing your organs and muscle soreness. You ever have seen athletes that take an ice bath after games and runners after marathons. This is the same concept. A study has shown that this improves your immune system by increasing white blood cells in your body. This is based on a 2009 study conducted on 360 subjects if you want to do more research on it. 2. The next benefit of cold showers is that it reduces depression. This is by a release of a hormone in your brain that’s triggered by the cold water. This is based on a 2008 scientific study that Adapted a cold shower as a potential treatment for depression. You can look into this and the other studies for further information. 3. It can also help you with the emotional shifts. If you feel anger or stress, it can help reduce that. Again, this is based on a 1994 study if you want to look it up. 4. The next benefit honestly sounded too good to be true, but cold showers could actually burn a little bit of fat. Now some of your body fat works to keep you warm, so a cold shower will put those into overdrive. This is based on a New England journal study in 2009 if you want a reference.

Millions of people globally practice the Wim Hof Method for an array of reported benefits, such as: reducing inflammation, dealing with depression, increasing willpower. Hopefully by the end of this video, you will have a better understanding or appreciation on whether this is something you would personally benefit from. Personally, I believe as long as you are exercising the Wim Hof Method well-within a boundary of safety, there is nothing to lose from giving it a go and assessing the impact it has on your own physiology. wim hof method book - 🤍 Disclaimer: The breathing exercises can have strong physiological effects, and must be practiced as instructed. If you ever took a cold shower you know it can be equal parts exhilarating and cruel. In this video, I’m going to discuss the benefits of showering with cold water when it comes to building muscle and recovering from your workouts. There is just as much science and research that supports that idea of taking cold showers after workouts as there is to avoid them all together if building muscle is your goal. First, it helps to discuss the available science on the topic of cold showers and working out. Most of the studies that have been done on this subject have had their participants immerse themselves in ice baths rather than apply the cold water in a shower. There is a big difference in the effect this has on lowering core body temperature. First it can be done to a greater degree through submersion and second, it can be done at a faster rate. That said, in many of these studies they have found that the use of cold water submersion following a hard workout can be detrimental to muscle growth. The reason for this is due to the blunting of the inflammatory processes and growth mediators that are spawned from the reactive inflammatory signaling that happens following a hard workout. When you train, your muscles react in a way that your body perceives as inflammation. This is not the typical form of inflammation that you would associate with an injury or even an abrasion to the skin. That said, the cell mediators that initiate the healing process that allow the muscles to grow back bigger and stronger are interrupted and never allowed to fully be expressed. This has been theorized by researchers to limit the amount of muscular hypertrophy that you can see if you make regular application of cold water a habit following your workout. That said, as with everything else that occurs in and out of the gym, the timing and specific application matters. What about cold showers? Do they have the same negative effect? If they are not done immediately following training do they have the same negative gains killing effect as shown in the studies? The answer is no. In fact, taking a cold shower at a time that isn’t immediately following your workout can have a muscle growth inducing effect. The exact opposite response as was experienced with the submersion after working out. This is due to an important hormonal response that occurs in some people, particularly those that have high baseline levels of cortisol. When you are a natural lifter, the number one thing you can do to increase muscle growth is prioritize your recovery. This comes in the form of improved nutrition, better sleep, following a proper training split and even the right form of supplementation. Having high levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, is something that you may not even be aware of unless you have bloodwork that shows the issue. The use of cold showers at a time not immediately following your workouts has been shown in a 2021 study to significantly blunt the levels of cortisol. Lower baseline levels of cortisol will likely lead to increased anabolic signaling and an easier time for building muscle. I always recommend, if you are doing everything right with your recovery right now but don’t seem to be building muscle as quickly as you should from your hard work, try incorporating cold showers into your daily routine. Now, this does not mean that you have to take only cold showers. There are many applications and protocols that involve alternating periods of cold and hot water (in a contrast setting) or simply applying the cold water and then stepping out of the water all together for alternating bouts. If you haven’t tried to boost your stalled muscle gains by taking a cold shower, it is definitely something you will want to give a shot. Remember to commit to it for about 4 weeks at minimum if you decide to try it. It takes the body some time to adjust to the shock of cold showers at the beginning. It will also allow your body more time to notice the benefits in your recovery and the resulting muscle growth that might happen if you are in that state of lower cortisol levels that are holding back your muscle gains. I describe mechanisms by which deliberate cold exposure can enhance mental health, physical health, and performance. I detail specific protocols to safely engage in deliberate cold exposure, including minimal exposure times, time-of-day effects, determining optimal temperatures, recovery, mindset, and movement during cold exposure. I discuss how cold exposure can be used to safely stress the body to improve attention, mood, and cognitive focus and boost metabolism and reduce inflammation. Also, I explain how cold exposure on specific regions of the body (called glabrous skin surfaces) can be leveraged to enhance endurance and weight training and increase work output. #HubermanLab #ColdExposure #IceBaths Thank you to our sponsors AG1 (Athletic Greens): 🤍 ROKA: 🤍 - use code "huberman" Helix Sleep: 🤍 See Andrew Huberman Live: The Brain Body Contract Tuesday, May 17th: Seattle, WA Wednesday, May 18th: Portland, OR 🤍 Our Patreon page 🤍 Supplements from Thorne 🤍 Social & Website Instagram - 🤍 Twitter - 🤍 Facebook - 🤍 TikTok - 🤍 Website - 🤍 Newsletter - 🤍 Subscribe to the Huberman Lab Podcast: Apple Podcasts: 🤍 Spotify: 🤍 Google Podcasts: 🤍 Other platforms: 🤍 Article Links Brief aerobic exercise immediately enhances visual attentional control and perceptual speed. Learn exactly how to setup your cold showers to reap 6 AMAZING benefits that'll improve your life, mindset, and body. You'll find out how to work up to taking a cold shower every morning, and how to slowly lower the temperature over time. Cold therapy (ice baths, cold plunges, cold showers) has been used by people like Wim Hoff to develop seemingly superhuman abilities. Discover why you should stop taking hot showers immediately and switch them for cold ones. 🔥 FREE 6 Week Shred: 🤍 📲 FREE Diet/Workout Planner Tool: 🤍 Taking a cold shower can feel very uncomfortable, give you goosebumps, and make your whole body feel freezing. However cold showers and cold therapy, in general, can help you feel more alert and energized, it can improve your health, and can even help you burn fat. These are just some of the benefits that you can use to justify going through the unpleasantness of using cold emersion as a therapeutic agent. (*) And really there are 6 amazing scientifically proven benefits when cold therapy is used correctly and I want you to understand what those are and how to start using the cold to reap those benefits today Now the first thing that most people don't realize is that cold therapy can drastically improve your mood, and your mental health to the point that it may help prevent and even treat depression. (1) One of the ways that cold exposure is able to improve your mental state is thanks to norepinephrine. When you're body is exposed to cold temperatures norepinephrine is rapidly released into the bloodstream. This is a neurotransmitter that's associated with things like vigilance, attention, focus, and mood. And this isn't debatable, the fact that cold exposure can increase norepinephrine is shown in multiple studies, both in mice and humans. (2) Interestingly, when norepinephrine is depleted in a person, that person becomes depressed, and we actually see this in a study published in the journal Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment. (3) That’s why ice plunges and cold showers might help prevent and treat depression. Cold therapy drastically increases norepinephrine levels, which, helps support a better mood and cognitive function. Now of course the question is how cold should the temperature be to get the benefits of a boost in norepinephrine? Well, one study found that one hour of cold water immersion at a relatively regular temperature of 68° Fahrenheit did not activate norepinephrine release, meanwhile, one hour at 57° Fahrenheit increased norepinephrine levels by a whopping 530%. (4) of course one hour sounds painfully long, but fortunately, you can get similar benefits in a shorter time frame if you turn the temperature down further. And we have evidence of this. A long-term study found that by immersing yourself in cold water at 40° Fahrenheit for only 20 seconds and sticking to that routine consistently for twelve weeks, that can increase norepinephrine levels by 200 to 300%. (5) And it could be possible that taking an ice bath in freezing cold water, would require even less time to reap the benefits. Now you don't want to go straight to freezing cold water, you do want to work up to it, and I'll go over that process in a bit But first, you should be aware that one of the best benefits of exposing your body to the cold is that it leads to a reduction in overall inflammation throughout your body. Now you've probably heard that inflammation is the route cause of most modern diseases. And even though inflammation gets a pretty bad wrap, inflammation itself isn't entirely a bad thing. In fact, it's vital for your health and well-being because it's the first step of the healing process that's used to prevent further damage by eliminating the initial cause of the cell injury, and then the inflammation helps clears out the damaged tissues and dead cells. This is actually what starts the process of repairing damaged tissues. However, when the inflammation process goes into overdrive, so when you have chronically high inflammation markers for seemingly no reason, that's when inflammation causes a lot of trouble for a lot of people. For example, as stated by the Harvard Medical School, “chronic inflammation is associated with heart disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, and bowel diseases like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.” (6) Research also identifies inflammation as the key driver of the aging process. (7) One specific study looked closely at elderly people ranging from 85 to over 110 years old and researchers found that low inflammation was the only biomarker that accurately predicted survival and cognitive capabilities across all the age groups. Remember that cognitive decline is what leads to the rising rates of dementia and Alzheimer's that we see today. The researchers also came to the conclusion that Inflammation is one of the most important variables that determine mortality, capability, and cognition up to very old...
