Oceania was the last region to be settled by humans and the last part of Oceania to be settled by humans was Polynesia. Polynesians are famous for their voyages to remote islands in distant parts of the Pacific. Using outrigger canoes, they founded a society across islands stretching in a triangle from the Hawaiian Islands to Easter Island to New Zealand. That society was reasonably well-connected by trade, language, culture, and religion, despite its distribution over such a large area. One major question today is where did the Polynesians originally come from? Several theories have been proposed over the years, but one which is gaining ground is that the Polynesians originated from Taiwan, parts of Papua New Guinea, and Southeast Asia. Another intriguing area of study is the genetic connection between Polynesians and South Americans. Could the Polynesians Have Origins in South America? One early theory of the origin of Polynesians is that they came from South America and sailed west, eventually reaching the Polynesian triangle. This was proposed by the archaeologist, writer, and explorer Thor Heyerdahl , who even constructed a Polynesian balsa wood raft and, with a team, sailed it west of Easter Island from the South American coast. This demonstrated the feasibility of using a primitive craft to cross the Pacific. The thing to remember about experimental archaeology is that just because something could have theoretically been done doesn’t mean that it actually happened that way. Although it is plausible that Polynesia was settled by ancient South Americans; all the genetic, linguistic, and ethnographic evidence points toward a predominantly southeast Asian origin. It may not be 100% accurate. The Polynesian languages form a genealogical group of languages, itself part of the Oceanic branch of the Austronesian family. There are 38 Polynesian languages, representing 7 percent of the 522 Oceanic languages, and 3 percent of the Austronesian family. While half of them are spoken in geographical Polynesia (the Polynesian triangle), the other half – known as Polynesian outliers – is spoken in other parts of the Pacific: from Micronesia to atolls scattered in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu. The most prominent Polynesian languages, in the number of speakers, are Tahitian, Samoan, Tongan, Māori, and Hawaiian. The ancestors of modern Polynesians were Lapita navigators, who settled in the Tonga and Samoa areas about 3,000 years ago. The Lapita culture is the name given to a Neolithic Austronesian people and their material culture, who settled in Island Melanesia via a seaborne migration from around 1600 to 500 BCE. They are believed to have originated from the northern Philippines, either directly, via the Mariana Islands, or both. Linguists and archaeologists estimate that this first population went through common development during about 1000 years, giving rise to Proto-Polynesian, the linguistic ancestor of all modern Polynesian languages. After that period of shared development, the Proto-Polynesian society split into several descendant populations, as Polynesian navigators scattered around various archipelagoes across the Pacific – some traveling westwards to already populated areas, others navigating eastwards and settling in new territories (Society Islands, Marquesas, Hawaii, New Zealand, Rapa Nui, etc.). This is Spiritual Studies session #34. This session focuses on the various beliefs of the precolonial spiritualities across the Pacific Islands. With a predominant focus on the Hawaiian and the Maori, this labor aims to restitch together the beliefs of their common ancestor by investigating the similarities between the beliefs throughout Polynesia. Oddly enough, the myths and deities investigated have stark similarities to seemingly well beyond the Polynesians, most notably the Greeks. Crime and lawless activity continue to spiral out of control at the hands of Jacinda Adern and labour governments failure. Jacinda has ran for the hills while New Zealand drops further into 3rd world status. A polynesian gang from South Auckland attack the car of another young guy who provoked the group by 'almost' driving in to them. I was actually just walking into Auckland city for the first time in 5 months when this happened. Not surprised at all that this happened in front of me after being in the city for less than 5 minutes. Literally just parked up.
